What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do? As Crew Supervisor C - Collector (Wastewater) in the Public Works Department of the City of Newport News, you'll oversee a dedicated team responsible for maintaining and constructing sanitary sewer systems. Your day-to-day tasks will vary from planning and directing work orders for force mains, gravity mains, and pump stations, to ensuring the effective supervision and training of your crew. You might start your day by assigning tasks and providing guidance on complex issues, ensuring that all work adheres to safety standards and city codes. Throughout the day, you'll monitor inventory, make decisions on resource deployment, and handle any exceptional situations that arise.
 
You could find yourself attending pre-construction meetings, reviewing specifications, and making recommendations for materials and equipment. Your role also involves conducting site visits, responding to citizen inquiries, and collaborating with regulatory agencies and other city departments. In this role, you will assist various stakeholders, including local businesses and residential neighborhoods, by ensuring their sewer connections are properly maintained and addressing any sewer-related issues. Whether you're operating heavy equipment like backhoes and excavators or providing cost estimates and quality assurance, your work will be crucial in maintaining the city's wastewater infrastructure and ensuring public health and safety.
 
Additionally, you'll participate in departmental management teams, providing input on special projects and staying abreast of statewide policy initiatives and best practices. Your ability to lead by example and demonstrate the highest level of ethics will be essential in fostering a cooperative and professional work environment.

How much money can I make? This role has a full salary range of $49,459.00 - $81,608.00. The targeted hiring range for this opening, based on qualifications, experience, and market considerations, is included in the job listing. What are the qualifications for this position? This position requires a high school diploma and 3-5 years of experience in sanitary sewer or a related construction field and 1-2 years of supervisory experience OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

What else should I know? This role requires obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit before employment. Completing the CDL practical test and obtaining Escort Vehicle Driver designation is required within 60 days of hire. Successful completion of the following certifications within one (1) year of employment is required: National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System Certifications Virginia Responsible Land Disturbance (RLD) Certificate of Completion OSHA-approved Trench and Excavation Competent Person Certification Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Flagger and Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Certifications.
 
This position is designated as Essential Personnel and requires availability to work during and after natural disasters and emergency situations. This role may require you to lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing 20 to 50 pounds
